CNN — Facebook has suspended the rollout of its dating service in Europe planned for the eve of Valentine’s Day after officials from the Irish data regulator searched its offices. The regulator said in a statement that it “conducted an inspection” of Facebook’s offices in Dublin earlier this week after learning on February 3 about the US company’s plans to introduce the feature in the European Union. The Irish regulator, which supervises Facebook because the company’s European headquarters is in Dublin, added that the company had not provided it with a data protection assessment of the dating service on February 3. Deputy commissioner and head of communications Graham Doyle confirmed to CNN that it is the first time the commission has executed a search like this at Facebook or any of the major big tech companies since the General Data Protection Regulation GDPR came into effect in The commission confirmed it has 11 open investigations into the social media company and its various subsidiaries. It is expected to make a decision soon on whether Facebook’s WhatsApp has violated European privacy laws. Facebook Dating launched in the US in September. Any Facebook user can “opt in” to the service and create a dating profile, which can match users based off of interest, preferences and friend group, if they choose. Bumble’s new headquarters in Austin, Texas, are a far cry from the typically sparse tech company offices found in Silicon Valley. But that was exactly what Whitney Wolfe, the year-old CEO of the female-first dating app, was trying to do. Whitney Wolfe, the year-old creator and CEO of the million-user dating app Bumble, sits in her office in the company’s new headquarters in Austin, Texas.
The headquarters—appropriately bee-yellow, with an overall bumblebee theme—are where the newlywed Wolfe recently married her longtime boyfriend, Texas oil heir Michael Herd, in Positano, Italy, runs the dating app alongside Bumble Bizz, which will launch October 1. Bumble Bizz connects users through geo-targeting and enables them to swipe through people—male and female—nearby looking to network, mentor, hire, or be hired.
I anticipate that Bumble Bizz will help give women access to other like-minded women, and men looking for more women in leadership positions in their teams. While the concept of female empowerment is an important one to many women entrepreneurs, it holds a particularly paramount place to Wolfe. In , she left her position at the dating app Tinder, after filing a complaint with the California courts claiming that she was sexually harassed and discriminated against at work, stripped of her cofounder title, and pushed out of the company.
The suit which was eventually settled outside of court , and Wolfe, helped spur an important national conversation about the treatment of women in tech. Appropriately enough since her business is all about female empowerment, when it came time to build the first custom office space for her rapidly growing team, Wolfe chose women to design the interior.

She started writing the book three years ago when her husband was a third-year medical student. He was on his surgery rotation, which felt like the pinnacle of all the challenges. There was so much she wished she had known going into this process—in terms of what she can expect, what medical school looks like, and what kinds of relationship issues would come out each year.
